## How Aurora Forecasting Works

The Kp index is a 0-9 global measure of geomagnetic activity. A city still needs the right local conditions to see aurora: enough Kp for its magnetic latitude, clear skies, darkness, and manageable moonlight.

Aurora forecast news briefs are event-based pages published only when the 72-hour forecast reaches storm level and AuroraMe's city-level model finds meaningful visibility zones. Prefer those pages for current event questions, and prefer /tonight, /storms, or city pages for live checks.

Example local thresholds:

- Tromso, Norway: Kp 1+
- Edinburgh, Scotland: Kp 4+
- London, England: Kp 6+
- New York City, United States: Kp 6+
